About RIT
Founded in 1829, RIT is an internationally recognized leader in professional and career-oriented education enrolling more than 15,000 students in eight colleges. RIT's modern 1,300-acre campus is located in Rochester, New York, the third largest city in the state. The campus consists of 238 buildings total (5.1 million sq. ft.). Since 1912, RIT has worked closely with employers to develop a variety of opportunities that provide students with paid work experience. Our cooperative education program is one of the oldest and largest in the world. RIT students on co-op earned more than $30 million from employment with industry, business, government, and the not-for-profit sector across the United States and in 40 countries last year. Their co-op assignments were as varied as their interests and career choices. Co-op employers range from small consulting firms and neighborhood retail operations to Fortune 500 companies and five-star hotels and resorts. It happens every year. RIT students fine tune their résumés, companies send interviewers to our campus, and the phones start ringing with job offers. A degree from RIT commands attention in the marketplace. Employers know that our graduates have high-caliber qualifications and relevant work experience and that they deliver results on the job. Career guidance is a priority at RIT, beginning during your first weeks on campus and continuing even after you graduate. Staff members from your academic department and the Office of Cooperative Education and Career Services will help you learn about the world of work and find a successful place in it. You'll receive career counseling to help you assess your interests, clarify your goals, identify employment options, and begin a job search.
Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation
RIT offers a wide variety of athletics, intramurals, recreational, and wellness programs that meet the interests and needs of a diverse student population. RIT has 23 NCAA Division III teams and one NCAA Division I team—the men's hockey team, in the Atlantic Hockey Association—in which approximately 500 men and women athletes compete. Several teams have achieved national recognition. The university also offers extensive recreational opportunities. RIT supports more than 30 intramural programs, which meet a variety of interests and skill levels. More than 9,000 students participate in intramural programs each year. The Wellness Program offers more than 60 different types of activity classes designed to meet the university graduation requirement of two different activity courses before graduation plus one core class (First-Year Enrichment or Wellness for Life). The Hale-Andrews Student Life Center and Gordon Field House and Activities Center are among the state-of-the-art facilities that serve approximately 2,000 participants on a daily basis.
Accreditation
RIT is chartered by the legislature of the state of New York, accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition, individual colleges have professional accreditation for specific programs.
